Who the hell is Dick Frizzell? by John Gow, Director Gow Langsford Gallery.

The landscapes, the tiki, the still lifes, the phantoms, the abstractions, the roadside signs, commissions, sculptures and a comprehensive catalogue…Dick’s way of seeing, his unique way of mining subject matter from the very fabric of life and every day living. Dick’s fertile mind takes an idea and extends it to a place where most people would never imagine it could go.

About Dick Frizzell:

Dick Frizzell - born 1943 - is a New Zealand artist, based in Hawke’s Bay. He trained at the Canterbury School of Fine Arts from 1960 to 1964 under Rudi Gopas and Russell Clark. He has made a name for himself as an iconoclastic maverick, taking on and re-working many different styles of art, both high and low. Frizzell’s work is attention-grabbing and humorous…to him, nothing is sacred.

Frizzell also turns his hand to landscape painting...and the success of his artistic career is, in part, due to the number of dramatic diversions he has made between different art styles and genres. His work has always been characterised by a highly skilled handling of paint and an endlessly inventive range of subject matter. Although primarily a painter, Frizzell also produces an extensive range of works on paper including lithographs and screen prints.

The per person, double, twin share or triple share rooms price will be advised as soon as it becomes available.

12 nights in Renaissance Villa Arborea in the hills above Lucca, an historic Villa dating back many centuries testified by the 1000 year old ruins of a tower now incorporated into the splendidly restored Villa. Original features of the 1500’s have been retained, including huge fireplaces, fragments of frescoes of the 1500’s and a magnificent arched loggia stretching the entire width of the Villa, an elegant testimony to the prestige and grandeur of the past and a stunning example of a Villa Lucchese.

A creaking door, the squeak from a well trodden wooden floor or a capricious door on an antique wardrobe are not deemed faults by people who understand the enchanting atmosphere of a Villa lived in over many centuries by generations of Lucca’s finest citizens. This privately situated Renaissance Villa has 2 swimming pools, beautiful garden, green areas and trees, an olive grove to the rear in which you can walk, and paint, and huge communal lounges and living areas, dining rooms and kitchen as well as a loggia complete with arches, columns and capitals in Renaissance style.

Jamie Oliver and Toby Puddock televised cooking programs in the villa and Laura Ashley chose it as a backdrop for the annual catalogue. Dick Frizzell has chosen it for your Workshop Vacation.
